Dr. Zain Khalpey, MD PhD

Dr. Khalpey is Associate Professor of Surgery, Physiological Sciences & Biomedical Engineering at the University of Arizona in Tucson and also serves as the Surgical Director, Heart Transplant and Mechanical Circulatory Support Program.
He also serves as Co-Director of the Heart Transplant and Perfusion Science Programs, Director of the Mechanical Circulatory Support and Artificial Heart Programs, and Director of Robotic Mitral Valve Program in the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Banner University Medical Center. He is also an Adjunct Professor at Columbia University. He earned his medical degree from the University of London, his PhD in cardiothoracic surgery, bioenergetics, and cardiac transplantation from Imperial College London and subsequently completed extensive postgraduate training in both the UK and the US. In the UK, Dr. Khalpey was awarded the prestigious Winston Churchill Medal for his research as well as a highly prestigious lifetime Hunterian Professorship from the Royal College of Surgeons of England, where he remains a member. He is certified by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery, and has earned the coveted title of Fellow of the European Board of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. For his extensive expertise and important work, he has been awarded the prestigious Fulbright Distinguished Chair in Medical Sciences in Europe Award. With over 90 papers authored and over 700 citations, Dr. Khalpey is one of the most active surgeons in his field and a respected member of the international surgical community.
